The role:

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the core team at the new CoSTAR National Lab.

You will work in a creative, inclusive and dynamic environment where you will be responsible for embedding principles of inclusion in our research, developing the standards, practices, and ethical approaches that will shape the future landscape of the creative industries.

The CoSTAR National Lab Inclusion and Ethics Research Fellow is a key part of the Inclusive Futures team, working closely with the Head of Inclusion to deliver the Equality Diversity and Inclusion strategy to conduct research and be involved in advising across a range of research projects as part of our ambitious R&D and innovation programme.

The post will seek to advance knowledge in inclusive and ethical approaches to innovation, contributing to interdisciplinary research and developing novel creative technologies as part of the CoSTAR National Lab.  You’ll be expected to contribute to a range of research activities, bringing expertise and experience to all our programmes.

The role requires excellent people, project, research and writing skills. You’ll need to be agile, responsive, and creative in your approach to delivery.  A general understanding of some of the key emerging technologies and their application in the future production landscape would be useful (e.g. virtual production, XR, games technology and creative uses of AI).

You will engage with the CoSTAR Network across our ground-breaking research projects and activities, working closely with internal colleagues at Royal Holloway, University of London and CoSTAR National Lab partners, as well as collaborating with industry consortia partners, funders and relevant policy makers and industry stakeholders including UKRI/AHRC etc.

You’ll be expected to work with all stakeholders to achieve a positive profile, build awareness and increase the reputation of the National Lab both in the UK and internationally. The research output and activities may be utilised for academic publication, as well as Internal & External Comms, PR/Press, social media, web, funder reporting, events, awards entries and other promotional activity.

About the CoSTAR National Lab: Royal Holloway, University of London, has been announced as the lead organisation to run the CoSTAR National Lab, a £51.1m investment by the UK Government to ensure the UK’s screen and performance industries have the infrastructure and the skills to stay ahead.

By bringing together world leaders in technology, research and story, we will catalyse innovation for the UK’s Creative Industries. Partnered with University of Surrey, Abertay University, National Film & Television School, Pinewood Studios, BT, Disguise & Surrey County Council, the CoSTAR National Lab will place R&D at the heart of UK storytelling and storytelling at the heart of R&D. You should apply if you:

  • Hold a PhD or Masters in a field related to emerging technologies, inclusive design or inclusion practice, or ethics. Candidates with equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Can demonstrate experience in influencing, monitoring, reporting and stakeholder engagement around inclusion.
  • Have experience of data analysis related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. This might be in a professional or academic context. Ideally, you’ll have some experience of data-visualisation methods and tools, but this is not essential. Would enjoy the challenge and buzz of working for the new CoSTAR National Lab in R&D for the Creative Industries with world-leading higher education institutions and industry partners.
  • Enjoy generating new ideas and methods and practices related to inclusive innovation and ethics across the CoSTAR National Lab and wider CoSTAR Network.
