We welcome applications for a Research fellow post within the AHRC-funded research project Creativity, Community & Resilience (CCR).

Creativity, Community & Resilience is a collaborative project between the Universities of Southampton, Brighton, and Glasgow and community partners in the LGBTQ+ youth sector.  The project investigates how community belonging can improve liveability, build collective resilience, and support trans and gender diverse (TGD) young people’s wellbeing.

Centring Creative Methods to co-produce knowledge with youth on the community assets that sustain TGD wellbeing and efforts to secure human rights, this research breaks new ground, methodologically and epistemologically, and foregrounds aspects of TGD young people’s lives that are drastically underrepresented in research.

CCR aims to produce pioneering research on collective resilience and community building in the UK by TGD youth through a strength-based and youth-led participatory approach, producing evidence on the protective factors community belonging may offer, including online community building.

CCR further aims to address issues of TGD liveability through a children’s rights perspective and to tell a more expansive story about TGD young lives.

CCR contributes a critical perspective on the uses and value of creative methods, exploring the potential to expand ‘ways of knowing’ by critically evaluating how we purposefully produce knowledge with TGD youth via Participatory Action Research and creative methods.

This post will be based in the Winchester School of Art within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, where the PL is based. You will be part of a supportive group of interdisciplinary researchers from the social sciences, arts and humanities. An international academic advisory board and a youth advisory board further support the project. There is fieldwork planned for different parts of the UK.

To be successful in the role you will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications) with experience in participatory qualitative research methods in a relevant discipline (e.g., gender studies, cultural studies, digital media, sociology, youth studies, community psychology) and have knowledge and expertise in transgender scholarship.  You will have an interest in arts-based and creative methods, and youth research. You will have experience in qualitative data analysis. You will have the ability to plan and organise work independently and as part of a team. You will have the proven ability to write research presentations and papers for peer review publication as well as the ability to communicate with non-academic stakeholders and different audiences.

The University of Southampton is a Stonewall Diversity Champion; is an accredited Disability Confident Leader; and holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award and Race Equality Charter Bronze award, demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities in the workplace.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

A DBS check is required for this role
