About the job

The Department of Architecture and Planning has the pleasure of announcing a temporary substitute Assistant Professorship for 50% for a period of three years. 

The position is associated with the two-year international MSc program in Urban Ecological Planning (UEP). The program is focused on addressing complex urban challenges within the context of uncertainty and resource scarcity, with a developing focus on enabling just climate transition. A practice-based program, UEP is centered around a participatory and transformational approach to urban planning and development. Research interests in the group range from decolonizing planning discourses, adaptive approaches in planning practice, informality and governance, public space and the commons and urban heritage as a resource. 

Your immediate leader will be head of department.

Duties of the position

  • The position entails teaching in the Master’sprogram in Urban Ecological Planning.  
  • Relevant courses that deal with participatory methods in planning, radical planning theory and theories of public space will be prioritised. A transdisciplinary focus on the relationship between planning and social science is an integral part of the courses. 
  • This position will also involve supervision of master students on relevant research themes.  
  • The candidateis expected to contribute to the developmen tof courses in collaboration with other departments within NTNU such as the Department of Sociology and Department of Geography.  
  • Participation in the field-based teaching in the program.

Required selection criteria

Assistant Professor (universitetslektor):

The position of Assistant Professor/universitetslektor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-6.

  • You must have a professionally relevant background with a Master’s Degree within urban planning, physical planning, architecture. Applicants witha social science background (geography, sociology, political science, development studies) may apply, how ever would have to demonstrate professional experience in planning practice.  
  • The candidate should have relevant research experience aligned with existing research portfolio and interests within the UEP research group.  
  • In accordance with NTNU's Regulations and local procedures for academic staff you must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level:
    • Completed programme in higher education teaching (minimum 200 hours) / relevant courses and practical teaching experience, and acquired basic skills in planning, executing, evaluating and developing teaching and supervision activities (basic teaching and supervision competence at higher education level. If you do not fulfil the criteria at the time of the appointment, you will be required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience in lecturing and supervision at Master’s studies level is preferred.  
  • Good written and oral English language skills.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Assitant Professor (universitetslektor) (code 1009) is normally from NOK 509.300.- to NOK 836.833.- per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.
