Job Details

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or Level 2 within UCD School of Earth Sciences. 24-month

Reference no - 017421

This postdoctoral position is part of the ROTTnROCK project, funded by a European Research Council Synergy grant (http://rottnrock.org). Candidates with expertise in numerical modelling, and thermal or fluid coupling are encouraged to apply. The position will be funded for 24 months, with opportunity for extension. Funding will also be supplied for computing, fieldwork, attendance at conferences and workshops, and publication fees.

This is an advanced research focused role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

ROTTnROCK is a collaborative project with PIs Claire Harnett (UCD), Thomas Walter (GFZ, Potsdam), Mike Heap (L'Institut de Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg, France), and Valentin Troll (Uppsala Universitet, Sweden). The overall aim of ROTTnROCK is to assess the effect of hydrothermal alteration on volcanic hazards, considering the contexts of flank collapse, dome collapse, and caldera fault reactivation. ROTTnROCK combines remote sensing, rock physics, geochemistry, and numerical modelling. ROTTnROCK is split into three work packages that focus on (1) where alteration occurs (remote sensing); (2) the effects of alteration on the physical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics of volcanic rock (geochemistry and petrophysics); and (3) the large-scale hazard implications (modelling). The appointed candidate will lead technical development in the modelling work package, using finite and discrete element methods that explore the integration of fluid and thermal effects into stability models. The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate initiative and leadership in research, as well as working within the broader international ROTTnROCK team.

Post Doc Level 1 Salary Range: €44,347 - €50,805 per annum or

Post Doc Level 2 Salary Range: €52,193 - €56,764 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on 8th of July 2024.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

The PD2 post is intended for researchers that have completed PD1. As with the PD1, if you have already completed your PD2 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD2, or your total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 6 years, you should not apply and should refer to Research Fellow posts instead.

Prior to application, further information (including application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: https://www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs/
