Full Time, Permanent

The Classics Department at Royal Holloway, University of London is seeking to appoint a permanent Lecturer in the Archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean to start as soon as possible and by 1st of January 2025 at the latest.

We encourage applications from those with research interests in the broad field of the Archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean (from ca. 1000 BC to 700 AD) that would complement the existing departmental areas of research expertise in the fields of Greek and Roman Archaeology (details about Research in the Department can be found here: https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/research-and-teaching/departments-and-schools/classics/research/). We would be particularly interested in applicants with experience of running fieldwork projects and plans for future fieldwork that would involve undergraduate or postgraduate students of the Department.

The successful candidate should be an excellent researcher with a good publication record at a level appropriate to the stage of their career and concrete plans for future research, including the preparation and submission of grant applications. They should also be committed to generating impact on wider, non-academic audiences through their research and able to engage with national and international networks, research councils and organisations.

The successful candidate should be an inspirational teacher with teaching experience appropriate to their stage of their career and broad teaching interests that would contribute to and enhance our teaching in the area of Archaeology. They should be able to teach key archaeological modules of our undergraduate curriculum that includes first-year introductory modules on Greek and/or Roman Archaeology, second-year modules with a methodological and hands-on focus (“From Dig to Digital” and “Life in the Big City”), and research-led third-year and postgraduate modules, including new modules inspired by their own research. They should also be able to direct undergraduate and MA dissertations and to attract and supervise doctoral students.

In addition to teaching and examining duties the Lecturer will be expected to take a full role in Departmental life, including being Personal Tutor to a number of undergraduate students, and taking on administrative duties in proportion with the role.

The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London. Postgraduate teaching often takes place in Central London.
