About the opportunity

The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use provides a world-first synergy of leading prevention, early intervention, treatment research and translation programs in substance use and mental disorders. The Matilda Centre brings together researchers currently working across disorder silos (substance use, depression, suicide, anxiety, exercise physiology, dietetics, chronic disease) to share skills, synergise data, and harness new technologies to develop and trial innovative prevention and early intervention programs for substance use and mental disorders. The Centre is further developing its capacity to disseminate, translate and implement best-practice evidence for the alcohol and other drug and mental health workforces. Associate Professor Christina Marel is Program Lead of Treatment and Translation in Complex Populations at the Matilda Centre and is currently growing her team of researchers to develop a program that will continue to build workforce capacity.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Psychologist to join the Matilda Centre and contribute to our growing program of work, focused on building the capacity of alcohol and other drug workforce to respond to mental health conditions. The project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, and the role will involve delivering training workshops to alcohol and other drug services and workers, supporting moderation and facilitation of an online community of practice for health care workers, and producing content summaries and reports. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the training and project activities. They will work directly with a team of junior and senior researchers.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• Deliver evidence-based workforce training to alcohol and other drug workers across Australia
• evaluate training programs, analyse data, and draft reports
• consult with healthcare practitioners and other stakeholders, and contribute to training and educational materials as appropriate
• contribute to the moderation and facilitation of an online community of practice
• deliver evidence-based workshops, seminars and other presentations to alcohol and other drug, mental health and other practitioner workers
• contribute to academic research and present findings
• foster open communication and collaboration within the team, addressing stakeholder queries and concerns in a timely manner, building trust within immediate work networks
• maintain required certifications for ongoing professional practice as appropriate
• monitor risk within the team, promote workplace health and safety, ensure alignment with university policies, and proactively address potential challenges
• undertake other duties and projects appropriate within the classification level as required

About you

• Master's qualifications in psychology
• Australian driver's license and willingness to travel (reimbursement available)
• unrestricted registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
• possess sound training skills, and experience delivering workplace training
• sound judgement and a demonstrated understanding of the relationship between substance use and mental health disorders
• previous experience working with people experiencing co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, psychological assessment, and interventions
• excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
• ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
• demonstrated experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• ability to research, evaluate, and summarise relevant information from various sources
• demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision.
